Dear @cyclesandsex,

I was wondering if I could get some advice. I have a history of irregular cycles and excessive body & facial hair. At first I thought it might be PCOS, but I have also always been very thin - which doesn't fit some of the other symptoms of PCOS, such as excess body weight, or trouble losing weight. Any ideas?

Yes, it’s possible to be thin and still have PCOS. The “lean PCOS” subtype accounts for about 20 percent of cases and can be diagnosed based on symptoms (irregular cycles and facial hair) together with ruling out other possible causes of those symptoms. Despite being normal weight or even underweight, women with lean PCOS benefit from dietary changes (such as lower sugar) that improve how insulin works in the body. Natural testosterone-lowering treatments such as zinc can also be helpful!
