I CAN FEEL MYSELF OVULATING- HELP! : ASK C+S

Dear @cyclesandsex,

I want to find out more about Mitelschmerz or middle pain, pain during ovulation. What exactly happens, does it happen to everyone? How can you either prevent, treat or avoid it. Is it always so painful. It felt like labour for me! If you have had it once will it occur again, please let the answer be no.

Mittelschmerz, or mid-cycle pain can be described as a sharp cramping abdominal pain that affects up to 20% of women. It’s usually one sided and occurs around the time an egg is released from the ovary (ovulation). Yup, your body is making it loud and clear that you are ovulating! Mittelschmerz is correlated with the rise in luteinizing hormone that typically triggers ovulation. LH basically causes the ovarian muscles to contract in anticipation of the egg release. Mittelschmerz may also be due to a small amount of fluid and blood being released when the follicle ruptures, which may irritate the lining of the abdomen. The entire process of the egg pushing against the ovarian wall, and the final rupture can take awhile, which is why the pain is sometimes felt for up to 24 hours! For most women, it is bearable - an expected part of their cycle. I recommend you take a hot bath (1 cup of epsom salts + 1/2 cup of bentonite clay), use a hot water bottle or a heating pad, and you should feel better in a few hours. For others, however, it is debilitating, sometimes even requiring a day off. Since the condition appears to be due to inflammation, a targeted natural approach to decrease inflammation in the body, and balance estrogen and progesterone can be highly effective in minimizing or eliminating the discomfort. This can be achieved by managing blood sugar (eating protein, fat and complex carbs at each meal especially breakfast + avoiding sugary foods), increasing omega 3-rich foods like wild-caught salmon and sardines to 2-3 times a week, and maintaining healthy gut flora by adding in 1 tablespoon of sauerkraut each day.
