DARKENED LABIA AFTER SEX: ASK C+S

animation (13).gif

Dear @cyclesandsex,

After three babies and a combined five years of breastfeeding, I've noticed my labia has darkened pretty significantly. Is that normal? Does it go away?

Love,

Dear #MommyMusings

First let me say, it is incredible that you grew and fed three babies just with your body. I am amazed on a daily basis by the power we have. I hope you are, too. The darkening of your labia is completely normal and common due to the hormonal changes that happened in your pregnancies. Many people also experience a darkening of their areolas in pregnancy as well. These two things likely will not change back to their original colors, though you may notice a slight lightening once you wean your youngest. The one thing that darkens that does fade after pregnancy is the linea nigra, which is the dark line many folks see running straight down their belly while pregnant. That one goes away! I had a mentor once told me, “We are never getting our bodies back after childbirth. And we’re never going to be 12 again either. We move forward as mothers, ya know what I mean?”

All the best,
