Dear @cyclesandsex,

Can sperm last in the vagina through my period?

Sincerely,                                                                                #goawaysperm

Dear #goawaysperm

Sperm leans more alkaline. Our vagina can sometimes lean more alkaline and sometimes more acidic, depending on where you are in your cycle. In order for sperm to be able to swim up your vagina and into your cervix, it needs an alkaline environment, which happens when you have fertile cervical fluid (this is the fluid that looks like lotion, cream or egg white). When you have fertile cervical fluid, sperm can live for up to 5 whole days! You might have fertile cervical fluid during your period, which would mean that yes, sperm can get in there. That’s why some people can get pregnant while on their periods (if early ovulation accompanies the fertile cervical fluid during your period).

Sincerely,

Dr. Or Pondak, Doctor of Natural Medicine
